About Parco Naturale Veglia-Devero

Located in the Ossola Valley of the Piedmont region, Parco Naturale Veglia-Devero encompasses over 7,000 hectares of pristine alpine wilderness characterized by rugged peaks, expansive alpine meadows, and crystal-clear lakes. Established in 1995, this regional natural park protects two distinctive high-altitude valleys—Valle Veglia and Val Devero—that lie within the Lepontine Alps near the Swiss border. The park’s geography features dramatic granite formations, glacial cirques, and serene alpine plateaus set between elevations typically ranging from 1,300 to over 2,600 meters above sea level. Rich biodiversity thrives here, including rare alpine plants, marmots, ibexes, chamois, and golden eagles. The park’s forests primarily consist of larch, pine, and spruce trees adapted to harsh mountain conditions. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the Veglia-Devero area for its extensive network of well-maintained hiking trails that lead to notable natural landmarks, such as Lago Devero with its vivid turquoise waters and the spectacular Valdo Valley. The region also offers opportunities for mountain biking, fishing in its alpine streams, and winter snowshoeing or ski touring. Cultural elements include traditional Walser mountain settlements with distinctive architecture, enhancing the visitor experience by blending natural and historical heritage. Parco Naturale Veglia-Devero's combination of breathtaking alpine scenery, rich ecosystems, and well-developed recreational infrastructure makes it a premier destination for nature lovers seeking tranquility and adventure in the high mountains of Northern Italy.
